SOUL & SELF-CARE SUNDAY
BIRTHDAY GLOW-UP: I CELEBRATE ME
Opening Poem — “I Celebrate Me”
Opening Poem — “I Celebrate Me”
Today I celebrate me—
not because life has been easy,
not because every dream came true,
but because God kept breathing purpose
into everything I’ve been through.
I celebrate the laughter,
I celebrate the tears,
I celebrate the woman
who survived some complicated years.
I celebrate the lessons,
the “no’s,” the “not yet,” the “wait,”
because somehow God kept reminding me
that delayed never meant too late.
So bring the cake, light the candles,
let the birthday music play—
I don’t need permission to be grateful
that God gave me another day.
No call? I still celebrate.
No gift? I’m still alright.
Because I woke up wrapped in mercy,
and baby… that is a birthday light!
I’m still growing.
Still glowing.
Still becoming who I’m called to be.
So today, tomorrow, and every day God gives me…
I celebrate me.

Good morning, family, and welcome to Soul & Self-Care Sunday.
Tomorrow is my birthday.
And because birthdays have a funny way of making us think about everything — where we are, where we thought we would be, who remembered, who didn’t, what we accomplished, what we haven’t accomplished — I wanted to talk today about something I’m calling:
THE BIRTHDAY GLOW-UP
And this glow-up has very little to do with makeup, clothes, hair, weight, money, or how good that birthday picture turns out.
This glow-up is about the spirit.
It’s about learning how to celebrate your life without handing someone else the responsibility of determining whether your life is worth celebrating.
Because here is something I have learned:
Your birthday cannot be measured by the number of phone calls you receive.
Your value cannot be measured by the number of gifts you unwrap.
Your significance cannot be measured by how many people post you on social media.
And your worth certainly cannot be determined by who remembers you and who forgets.
Sometimes birthdays are beautiful.
Sometimes they are sentimental.
And sometimes, if we are not careful, birthdays can become an emotional measuring stick.
We start counting.
“Who called me?”
“Who didn’t?”
“Who sent something?”
“Why didn’t they say anything?”
“How come they celebrated somebody else bigger than they celebrated me?”
And before you know it, a day that God gave you as evidence of LIFE becomes a day where you are questioning your VALUE.
No ma’am.
No sir.
We are not doing that.
Not this birthday.
Not this season.
Your life is already a gift.
Psalm 139:14 says:
“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”
Notice David did not say, “I will praise You once everybody else recognizes how wonderful I am.”
He said:
I praise You.
There comes a point in your life when you have to be able to recognize what God placed inside of you before anybody else applauds it.
That is part of the birthday glow-up.
THE BIRTHDAY INVENTORY
Now birthdays naturally make us reflective.
And reflection is healthy.
I believe in taking inventory.
But sometimes our inventory is terribly one-sided.
We look at:
What I haven’t done.
Where I haven’t traveled.
What I haven’t purchased.
Who I haven’t married.
How much money I haven’t made.
The business that isn’t where I thought it would be.
The dream that hasn’t happened yet.
And yes, evaluate your goals.
Absolutely.
But while you’re taking inventory, baby, make sure you count your assets too.
Count your wisdom.
Count your resilience.
Count your faith.
Count your creativity.
Count your relationships.
Count the prayers that God answered.
Count the things God protected you from that you didn’t even know were coming.
Count the doors He closed.
Count the doors He opened.
Count the times you almost quit — and somehow you didn’t.
That belongs on the inventory sheet too.
Some of us are walking around disappointed because we are only counting what is missing instead of counting what remains.
And Scripture reminds us in Lamentations 3:22–23:
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed… His mercies are new every morning.”
Every morning you wake up is God depositing new mercy into your account.
That’s worth celebrating.
YOU ARE SEEN
One of the beautiful things Scripture teaches us is how intimately God knows us.
Luke 12:7 says:
“Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”
Think about that.
God doesn’t just know your birthday.
He knows you.
He knows the thoughts you never say out loud.
He knows the dreams you’ve almost given up on.
He knows the disappointments you learned how to smile through.
He knows the prayers you whispered at 2:00 in the morning.
He knows the parts of you that people misunderstand.
He knows where you’re strong.
He knows where you’re tired.
He knows where you’re still healing.
And He cares.
First Peter 5:7 says:
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”
Not because you performed perfectly.
Not because you accomplished everything on your five-year plan.
Simply because…
He cares for you.
And sometimes that needs to be enough to lift your head.
DON’T LET THE ENEMY CRASH YOUR BIRTHDAY PARTY
Now let’s talk about something else.
Sometimes the enemy will use significant days to stir up insignificant thoughts.
Birthdays.
Anniversaries.
Holidays.
Milestones.
You can be perfectly happy and suddenly your mind starts saying:
“You should be further by now.”
“You’re getting older.”
“Everybody else is ahead of you.”
“You missed your chance.”
“Look what you still don’t have.”
That is when you have to talk back to your thoughts.
Second Corinthians 10:5 tells us to:
“Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
Every thought does not deserve a chair at your birthday table.
Some thoughts need to be escorted out.
Immediately.
The thought that says you’re behind?
Out.
The thought that says your best days are gone?
Out.
The thought that says you have no value because somebody failed to recognize you?
OUT.
The Bible says in Philippians 1:6:
“He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”
That means God is still working.
If you are still breathing, He is still writing.
Your story is not finished.
THE GLOW-UP IS GRATITUDE
A real birthday glow-up is when you stop asking:
“Why don’t I have what they have?”
And you begin asking:
“God, what have You already placed in my hands?”
Gratitude changes the atmosphere.
You may not have everything you wanted.
But you have survived things you once thought would destroy you.
You have learned lessons that money couldn’t purchase.
You have wisdom younger versions of yourself prayed for.
You have discernment.
You have testimony.
You have history with God.
And Psalm 118:24 declares:
“This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
Notice it doesn’t say:
“This is the perfect day.”
It says:
This is the day.
And sometimes that is enough reason to rejoice.
CELEBRATE YOURSELF
I believe celebrating yourself is part of self-care.
Buy yourself the flowers.
Take yourself somewhere beautiful.
Put on something that makes you feel wonderful.
Eat the dessert.
Take the picture.
Play your favorite song.
Laugh loudly.
Dance badly.
Enjoy your life.
Self-celebration is not arrogance when gratitude is at the center of it.
You are simply saying:
“God, thank You for letting me experience this life.”
Jesus said in John 10:10:
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Life is meant to be lived.
Not merely endured.
And birthdays are beautiful reminders that you have been given another chapter.
YOUR AGE IS NOT A DEADLINE
And somebody needs to hear this:
Your age is not a deadline.
You are not late because your journey looks different.
You are not behind because somebody accomplished something before you did.
Ecclesiastes 3:11 says:
“He has made everything beautiful in its time.”
Your time still belongs to God.
There are things you have not seen yet.
People you have not met yet.
Places you have not traveled yet.
Ideas you have not created yet.
Prayers you haven’t even thought to pray yet.
And blessings that already have your name on them.
So instead of mourning what didn’t happen in the last chapter, walk into this next chapter asking:
“God, what are we doing next?”
THE BIRTHDAY GLOW-UP DECLARATION
So on this birthday — and on every birthday — I choose to remember:
I am not counting wrinkles.
I am counting wisdom.
I am not counting disappointments.
I am counting lessons.
I am not counting who forgot me.
I am remembering the God who never has.
I am not measuring my life by somebody else’s timeline.
I am honoring the journey God gave me.
I am not waiting for someone else to celebrate me.
I celebrate me.
Because God created me.
God kept me.
God carried me.
God corrected me.
God restored me.
God protected me.
And God is not finished with me yet.
Psalm 139:16 says:
“All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be.”
What a beautiful thought.
Before anybody sent you a birthday card…
God already knew this day was coming.
Closing Prayer
Father God,
Thank You for the gift of life.
Thank You for every birthday, every year, every season, every lesson and every moment that has shaped us into who we are becoming.
For the person listening today who may feel forgotten, overlooked, disappointed, or behind, remind them that they are completely known and completely seen by You.
Remind them that their worth was never determined by applause, attention, gifts, relationships, titles, money, accomplishments, or age.
Their value began with You.
Teach us how to celebrate ourselves without comparison.
Teach us how to take inventory of our blessings as carefully as we take inventory of our disappointments.
Help us recognize our strength.
Our wisdom.
Our resilience.
Our creativity.
Our growth.
Our testimony.
And Lord, as we enter another year, another season, another chapter, give us the courage to expect something beautiful.
We release what should have happened.
We release what didn’t happen.
We release who forgot us.
We release every timeline we created without consulting You.
And we step boldly into what You are doing next.
Thank You for keeping us.
Thank You for loving us.
Thank You for knowing every hair on our heads, every prayer in our hearts, and every day written in our story.
May our next chapter glow differently — not merely from what people see on the outside, but because Your joy, Your peace, Your wisdom, and Your presence are radiating from within.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Closing Thought
And family, remember this:
A birthday glow-up isn’t becoming someone new.
Sometimes it’s finally recognizing the value of the person God has been developing all along.
Celebrate the years.
Celebrate the lessons.
Celebrate the survival.
Celebrate the becoming.
And whether one person calls you or one hundred people call you…
celebrate yourself anyway.
Because waking up to another year with God still writing your story?
That is a gift worth opening.
Happy Birthday to me.
I’m still here.
I’m still glowing.
And God is still working.
