CLEAR THE CLUTTER: Making Room to Finish Strong
August 16, 2026
Good morning, beautiful people, and welcome to another Soul & Self-Care Sunday.
I’m Roceania “Roe” Williams, and today I want to talk about something that I think all of us need from time to time.
We need to clear the clutter.
And when I say clutter, I’m not just talking about that closet you keep saying you’re going to clean.
I’m not talking about the drawer where everything gets thrown because we don’t know where else to put it.
I’m talking about the clutter in our souls.
The clutter in our minds.
The clutter in our schedules.
The clutter in our relationships.
The clutter created by unfinished business.
The clutter created by old disappointments.
The clutter created by obligations we should have said “no” to six months ago.
And yes, sometimes even the clutter created by our own habits, thinking and choices.
Here we are on August 16th.
We have moved beyond the halfway point of 2026.
We have lived some life this year.
We have accomplished some things.
We have survived some things.
We have started some things.
We have finished some things.
We have prayed about some things.
And some things?
We are still waiting on God to answer.
But now we are moving toward that final stretch of the year, and I believe this is a wonderful time to ask ourselves:
What do I need to clean up so I can finish strong?
Because sometimes we are asking God to send us something new while every available space in our life is already occupied by something old.
Come on now.
We’re saying:
“God, give me greater.”
“God, elevate me.”
“God, open another door.”
“God, send the opportunity.”
“God, increase me.”
And maybe God is saying:
“I have more for you, but where are you going to put it?”
Because your hands are full.
Your mind is full.
Your calendar is full.
Your emotional capacity is full.
Your spiritual closet is full.
And some of what is taking up space doesn’t even belong there anymore.
Hebrews 12:1 tells us to:
“…lay aside every weight…”
Now notice, it doesn’t only say sin.
It says weight.
Because everything weighing you down isn’t necessarily bad.
Some things are simply too heavy for the season you are entering.
Some things were useful before, but they are not useful now.
Some relationships may not be terrible relationships, but they may no longer be healthy relationships for you.
Some responsibilities may not be wrong, but perhaps they were never yours to carry in the first place.
Some expectations may not have been unrealistic five years ago, but they may no longer fit who you are today.
And part of self-care is having enough self-awareness to say:
“This no longer belongs in my life.”
That doesn’t make you mean.
That doesn’t make you selfish.
That makes you intentional.
So today, I want us to look at four areas.
Four pockets of our lives that might need a little cleaning.
Pocket Number One: The Soul
Ask yourself:
What am I carrying emotionally that I need to surrender?
Is it disappointment?
Is it something somebody did to you?
Is it something somebody said?
Is it guilt?
Is it grief?
Is it anger?
Is it frustration over something that didn’t happen the way you thought it would?
Sometimes the clutter in our soul comes from constantly replaying something that is already over.
The event ended.
The relationship ended.
The conversation ended.
The season ended.
But mentally and emotionally, we keep going back into the room.
And every time we go back into that room, we pick up the same box.
And carry it around again.
At some point we have to say:
“God, I give this to You.”
Not because it didn’t matter.
Not because it didn’t hurt.
Not because we suddenly forgot.
But because carrying it forever is costing us too much.
You cannot walk freely into your future if your hands are still gripping yesterday.

Pocket Number Two: The Mind
Oh, this one is big.
What thoughts are taking up space in your mind?
Are you overthinking?
Are you second-guessing yourself?
Are you constantly worrying about what somebody else thinks?
Are you comparing your life to someone else’s life?
Are you replaying conversations?
Imagining scenarios?
Trying to predict everything that could possibly go wrong?
Baby, that is exhausting.
Mental clutter will wear you out before you ever physically do anything.
And sometimes self-care means saying:
“I am not giving this another hour of my mental energy.”
There are some things we simply have to stop renting space to.
Philippians 4 tells us what to think on — things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely and of good report.
In other words, God cares about what we allow to live in our minds.
So clean house.
Evict the worry.
Evict the comparison.
Evict the imaginary argument.
Evict the negative self-talk.
You need that space for creativity.
You need that space for vision.
You need that space for peace.

Pocket Number Three: Your Life
Now this one is practical.
What needs to be finished?
What needs to be filed?
What needs to be returned?
What needs to be paid?
What needs to be organized?
What email needs to be answered?
What appointment needs to be made?
What project needs to be closed?
What conversation needs to happen?
Because those unfinished little things create mental tabs.
And before you know it, you have 37 tabs open in your brain.
Anybody ever had too many tabs open on their computer?
And then you’re wondering why everything is moving slowly.
Sometimes your life is moving slowly because there are too many open tabs.
Close some.
Finish something.
Delete something.
Delegate something.
Make the phone call.
Send the email.
Clean the drawer.
Make the appointment.
Whatever it is, give yourself the gift of completion.
Because completion creates room.
And room creates peace.
Pocket Number Four: The Future
Now that we have cleaned up a little bit, let’s talk about where we are going.
What deserves your energy for the remainder of this year?
Not what everybody else wants from you.
What deserves your energy?
What is God calling you toward?
What goal still matters?
What dream needs your attention?
What commitment do you need to make to yourself?
We often think finishing strong means doing more.
Sometimes finishing strong means doing less — better.
It means becoming more selective.
More prayerful.
More disciplined.
More intentional.
Because here is something I really want you to remember today:
Everything cannot ascend with you.
Some habits cannot ascend with you.
Some mindsets cannot ascend with you.
Some fears cannot ascend with you.
Some people’s opinions cannot ascend with you.
Some versions of you cannot ascend with you.
You may have needed a certain version of yourself to survive one season.
But that doesn’t mean that same version is equipped to lead the next one.
And this speaks personally to me because next weekend, I celebrate another birthday.
And whenever I approach my birthday, I think about more than getting older.
I think about becoming.
I think about evolution.
I think about what I have learned.
I think about what I have survived.
I think about what God has carried me through.
But this year I also want to ask myself:
What am I not taking into my next chapter?
What have I outgrown?
What deserves another year of my energy?
What does not?
What am I ready to release?
What am I ready to receive?
Because a birthday is not just a celebration of how long you have lived.
It can also be a checkpoint.
A beautiful moment to say:
“God, thank You for bringing me this far. Now prepare me for where I’m going.”
Isaiah 43:19 says:
“Behold, I am doing a new thing…”
And I love that scripture.
But today, I want us to remember:
If God is doing something new, we have to make room for the new.
We cannot keep asking for expansion while refusing to release anything.
So this week, I want you to do a little inventory.
Not judgment.
Inventory.
Walk through the rooms of your life.
Your spiritual life.
Your emotional life.
Your relationships.
Your finances.
Your home.
Your goals.
Your commitments.
And ask yourself:
Does this belong in the next season?
If yes — nurture it.
If it needs attention — repair it.
If it needs finishing — finish it.
And if it needs releasing —
release it.
No guilt.
No long explanation.
No apology for choosing peace.
Because sometimes self-care looks like a spa day.
Sometimes self-care looks like a massage.
Sometimes self-care looks like sleep.
But sometimes self-care looks like cleaning up your life.
And making room.

CLEAR IT OUT
Clear out the worry,
Clear out the fear,
Clear what has followed
You year after year.
Clear out the clutter,
The old and the worn,
Some things must finish
For new things to be born.
Clear out the thinking
That says you can’t rise,
Clear every limit
You’ve placed on your life.
Keep what brings purpose,
Keep what brings peace,
Keep what helps goodness
And gratitude increase.
Finish what matters,
Release what does not,
Give thanks for the journey,
For all that you’ve got.
You’re not moving backward,
You’re clearing your view.
Because sometimes the blessing
Needs room to reach you.
LET US PRAY
Father God, thank You for another day.
Thank You for bringing us through every month, every challenge, every victory, every disappointment and every unexpected turn of this year.
Lord, help us to recognize what belongs in our lives and what does not.
Give us wisdom to know what to keep, courage to release what needs to go, discipline to finish what needs to be completed, and peace concerning the things we cannot control.
Clean our hearts.
Renew our minds.
Order our steps.
Show us the areas where we have been carrying unnecessary weight.
Help us lay aside every weight that prevents us from moving freely into everything You have prepared for us.
As we move through the remainder of this year, let us move with intention.
Let us move with clarity.
Let us move with peace.
Let us move in purpose.
And as You do a new thing in our lives, give us the wisdom to make room for it.
We thank You for where we have been.
We thank You for where we are.
And we thank You in advance for where we are going.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
And remember:
Before you ask God for more, take inventory of what is already occupying the space.
Clear the clutter.
Protect your peace.
Finish what matters.
Release what doesn’t.
And make room for what’s next.
I love you.
Take care of your soul.
Take care of yourself.
And I’ll see you next Sunday for a very special birthday edition of Soul & Self-Care Sunday.
Until then, be blessed — and have an amazing week.
Excerpt: Before you ask God for more, take inventory of what is already occupying the space. This Soul & Self-Care Sunday reflection reveals four pockets of your life that may need clearing — the soul, the mind, your life, and the future — so you can make room for what’s next and finish strong.
