SOUL & SELF-CARE SUNDAY
THE MORNING AFTER: STILL SHINING

Sometimes the week does not go the way you planned.
Sometimes the door you thought was opening closes before you ever walk through it. Sometimes the invitation changes. Sometimes the tone changes. Sometimes the very thing you prepared your heart for becomes the thing that bruises it.
That was Atlanta for me.
I was prepared to go.
Prepared to support. Prepared to celebrate. Prepared to pour.
Prepared to show up with love.
(had a gift and a thank you card for the woman of the hour)
And instead, I found myself on the receiving end of conversations that felt hurtful, condescending, accusatory, and deeply inaccurate.
That kind of disappointment can do something to you.
It can make you question yourself. It can make you replay conversations. It can make you wonder whether your heart was seen at all.

But then the morning came.
And so did mercy.
And a friend sent me two reminders I needed more than she probably knew:
“He didn’t just anoint you for the assignment, He also anointed you for the attacks.”
And:
“Due to divine reasons, this light cannot be dimmed.”
Whew.
Because sometimes we think the call only comes with purpose.
But the call also comes with pressure.
The assignment comes with misunderstanding.
The vision comes with resistance.
The light comes with people who are uncomfortable with how brightly it shines.
And that is where self-care becomes more than bubble baths and quiet mornings.
Sometimes self-care is remembering who you are before someone else’s opinion becomes louder than God’s voice.
Sometimes self-care is advocating for yourself.
Sometimes self-care is saying:
That is not an accurate reflection of me.
Sometimes self-care is choosing not to internalize what was projected onto you.
And sometimes self-care is realizing that you do not have to shrink just because someone else has not learned how to tend to their own flame.
BEWARE OF PEOPLE WHO NEED YOU DIMMED
Here is the lesson I am carrying:
Beware of people who need your light dimmed in order to feel like theirs is shining.
Real light does not compete with light.
Real light multiplies.
The right people will not be threatened by your gifts, your ideas, your generosity, your creativity, your preparation, or your presence.
They will recognize that what God put in you does not take anything away from what God put in them.
And this is the part I had to sit with:
I was told not to bring anything.
But what I had prepared was never about outshining anyone.
It was about contributing.
It was about honoring.
It was about adding value.
And that made me realize how easily generosity can be misread by a guarded heart.
How easily enthusiasm can be called overstepping.
How easily confidence can be called arrogance.
How easily a blessing can be mishandled because somebody assumed it came to compete.
That lesson humbled me.
Because I do not only want to remember how I was treated.
I want to remember how I treat people.
I never want to be so suspicious of someone else’s light that I fail to recognize what God may have sent through them.

THE ATTACK DOES NOT CANCEL THE ASSIGNMENT
The truth is, I put in work.
I prepared.
I prayed.
I wrote.
I planned.
I invested time, energy, emotion, and resources.
And even though the trip did not happen, I refuse to believe the work was wasted.
It was not all for naught.
Nothing surrendered to God is wasted.
The speech can still speak.
The lesson can still teach.
The preparation can still become purpose.
The experience can still become testimony.
And sometimes what was meant for one room ends up being for a completely different audience.
Maybe Atlanta did not get the message.
But maybe you were supposed to.
Romans 8:28 (KJV)
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
That does not mean all things feel good.
It means God knows how to use them.
THE LIGHT CANNOT BE DIMMED
I love this thought:
“Never let someone convince you that your brightness is the problem simply because they have not learned how to tend to their own flame.”
That one settled in my spirit.
Because I will not apologize for being creative.
I will not apologize for being generous.
I will not apologize for thinking big.
I will not apologize for showing up prepared.
I will not apologize for wanting to make God’s heart smile.
I can remain humble without becoming invisible.
I can stay teachable without letting people rewrite who I am.
I can receive correction without accepting distortion.
I can love people and still advocate for myself.
And I can walk away from a room without believing I was too much for it.
Maybe I was simply not assigned to remain there.
MUCH WORK, PRAYER AND EFFORT WENT INTO THE PREPARATION FOR MY SUPPORT TRIP
SOUL CARE: ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF
Here is your self-care assignment this week:
Do not abandon yourself trying to prove your heart to people committed to misunderstanding it.
Speak truthfully.
Correct what needs correcting.
Own what is yours.
Release what is not.
Advocating for yourself is not arrogance.
Sometimes it is stewardship.
God gave you a voice too.
Use it with wisdom.
Use it with grace.
Use it with truth.
But use it.
Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
That includes the words other people speak over you.
And it includes the words you speak over yourself after they leave.
So be careful what you repeat.
Do not take someone else’s careless words and turn them into your inner dialogue.
THE MORNING AFTER
The morning after disappointment is holy ground.
It is where you decide what gets to follow you.
The accusation?
The offense?
The insecurity?
The bitterness?
Or the lesson?
I choose the lesson.
I choose mercy.
I choose discernment.
I choose stronger boundaries.
I choose to remain soft without being foolish.
I choose to remain generous without being naïve.
I choose to remain confident without becoming hard.
And I choose to trust that God sees around corners I cannot.
Lamentations 3:22–23 (KJV)
“It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.”
That is the gift of the morning after.
Fresh mercy.
Fresh perspective.
Fresh strength.
PAIN CAN BECOME PREPARATION
Maybe the uncomfortable truth is this:
Sometimes the attack is evidence that the assignment matters.
Sometimes the resistance is preparing you.
Sometimes God allows a painful experience to reveal where you need stronger boundaries, deeper discernment, or greater confidence.
Not every closed door is rejection.
Some are protection.
Not every disappointment is loss.
Some are redirection.
And not every person who misunderstands you gets the final word.
God does.
Isaiah 54:17 (KJV)
“No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn.”
That does not mean the weapon never forms.
It means it does not get to finish you.
SOUL & SELF-CARE REFLECTION
Ask yourself:
Have I been shrinking because someone made me feel like too much?
Have I been questioning a gift God gave me because somebody else did not know how to receive it?
Have I been carrying words that God never said about me?
And am I giving people access to my heart who repeatedly make me question my worth?
Maybe today is the day to release that.
Maybe today is the day to say:
I will not dim.
I will not shrink.
I will not retaliate.
I will not become bitter.
But I will become wiser.
I will become clearer.
I will become more discerning.
And I will become even more committed to the assignment God gave me.
Because He did not just anoint me for the assignment.
He also anointed me to survive what comes with it.
And due to divine reasons?
This light cannot be dimmed.
CLOSING
The Atlanta tea did not happen for me.
But the lesson did.
The reflection did.
The growth did.
The clarity did.
And maybe that was the appointment after all.
The vision is still alive.
The work is still valuable.
The calling is still intact.
And I am still here.
Still standing.
Still shining.
Still becoming.
Still advocating for myself.
Still trusting God.
And still determined to make His heart smile.
Because no one else gets to decide how bright God called you to shine.
ALWAYS REMEMBER, JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE UNDER STRESS DOES NOT GIVE YOU A LICENSE TO BE A ZILLA! EVENTZILLA, BRIDEZILLA, BIRTHDAYZILLA:
